Glossary
Orange Ferry calls a match a crossing and the leaderboard a manifest. Here is every one of those words, with the ordinary football term next to it. You never need to know any of this to play — but it is all here anyway.
The ferry
The furniture: what the site is and what the main areas are called.
- Orange FerryThis website
- A free football prediction game wrapped around a football hub. The name is where the whole vocabulary comes from: matches are crossings, you board them, and the ferry sails whether or not you turned up.
- The boardThe fixtures and results display
- Named after a departure board in a terminal. The board is always public — anyone can read the fixtures and the final scores without an account. Your individual picks are not on it.
- The terminalThe football hub
- The part of the site that is not the game: today’s matches across every competition we carry, league tables, squads, players, news and transfers. Go there
- RouteA competition
- One league or tournament — the Premier League, La Liga, the Champions League. Your picks and your position are tracked per route, so a bad season in one does not follow you into another.
Making picks
Everything you touch on the predict page.
- CrossingA single match
- One fixture between two clubs. Every crossing takes exactly one pick from you: home, draw, or away.
- SailingA matchweek
- The full set of crossings in one round of a competition. "Next sailing" and "previous sailing" move you between matchweeks.
- DepartureKickoff
- When a match starts. A crossing "departs at kickoff" — clock time, local to you.
- Cast offThe pick deadline
- Picks lock one hour before kickoff. Once we cast off, that crossing is settled: you cannot change your call, and you cannot add one late.
- Claim your seatMake your pick
- Choosing a side on a crossing. Until the deadline you can change your mind as often as you like.
- Sail with themPick this team to win
- The button under each club on a match. Picking the draw means sailing with neither.
- AboardYour current pick
- The side you are currently on for a crossing. It shows on the club you have selected.
- SeatA locked-in pick
- Once a crossing has cast off, your pick is your seat on it — fixed, and scored against the final result.
- Green pickA normal pick
- Worth 3 points if you call the result correctly and 0 if you do not. Most of your picks are green picks.
- Orange pickA guaranteed single point
- Worth exactly 1 point whatever happens — right, wrong, or a draw you did not see coming. You get three per matchweek.
- Life ringThe same thing as an orange pick
- What the UI calls an orange pick, because that is what it does: it stops a crossing you have no read on from scoring you zero. Three a week, and they do not carry over.
- Rough waterA match you cannot call
- A derby, a cup tie, anything genuinely unpredictable. The advice to "save them for rough water" means spend your life rings on the fixtures you have least confidence in.
- ArrivedA finished match
- A crossing that has played out and been scored. On the board, arrived crossings show the final score instead of a kickoff time.
- Crossings sailedMatches you have picked
- Your running count of crossings you made a pick on. "Crossings booked" is the same count before they have played.
Where you stand
Your record, and how you compare with everyone else.
- ManifestThe leaderboard
- A ship’s manifest lists everyone aboard. Ours lists every player on a route, ordered by points. It updates itself as results come in.
- Log bookYour pick history
- Every crossing you have sailed and how each one settled — what you picked, what happened, and what it scored. Empty until you have made your first picks.
- Player cardA shareable image of your season
- A card with your record on it that you can download and post. You choose what it shows before you share it.
- ChallengeA head-to-head against a friend
- A private matchweek contest. You share a link, they pick the same crossings, and the two records are compared when the week settles.
- PassengersThe other people in your challenge
- Everyone who has joined a challenge you created, or that you have joined.
- Boarding inviteA challenge link
- The link that brings someone into your challenge. The shared player card is only the invite — they still need to make their own picks.
- Board nowSign up
- Create an account. Free, and you can start picking on the landing page before you make one.
- Prediction passThe ticket stub on the home page
- The orange stub beside the first fixture, printed like a real ferry ticket. It is decorative — the matchweek and route on it are live, but it is not something you hold or spend.
The hub
The football sections that are not part of the game.
- The wireThe news page
- Football headlines gathered from public publisher feeds. Every headline links straight back to whoever wrote it. Go there
- The gangwayThe transfers page
- Transfer news and the rumour mill — the way in and out of a club. Same rule as the wire: every line links to its source. Go there
